Floyd Medical Center Leverages Physician Champion During Allscripts EHR Implementation
"To actually have a physician involved in the system build and training greatly improved the implementation process, as he was able to relate day-to-day scenarios to the other physicians in the training. He also provided valuable insight into the ‘clinical’ requirements of specific types of charge methods,”
Sherri Atchley, Senior Consultant
With a mission to serve their community by delivering a technologically advanced healthcare system characterized by continually improving quality, accessibility, and affordability, Floyd Medical Center chose to further streamline operations by implementing an Electronic Medical Record (EMR). The Primary Care Network and residency program decided to go with Allscripts EHR.
Global Works Systems was contacted to manage their implementation of TouchWorks v.10. Global Works Allscripts EHR Implementation Services are designed to assist clients with installation and module roll-out. Our “Allscripts Certified Consultants” are experts at installing and training users on the full suite of modules at any stage of deployment.
Floyd chose to implement 10 EHR modules in all: Base, Dictate, Document, Scan, Rx+, Charge, Order, Result, Note, Pocket Library.
The implementation team consisted of 3 client members and 2
Global Works resources. The Global Works Team was led by Consultant Chad Kerr and included Consultant Sherri Atchley.
The Client Project Team included physician champion, Dr. Greg Asbury, who was involved in all design decisions, workflow, and system build. “To actually have a physician involved in the system build and training greatly improved the implementation process, as he was able to relate day-to-day scenarios to the other physicians in the training. He also provided valuable insight into the ‘clinical’ requirements of specific types of charge methods,” Sherri mentions. She added that, “having a physician onboard can help overcome resistance to new technology that some IT departments face from clinical staff.”
The Client Project Team received project team training from Allscripts and build sessions from Global Works. To further ensure successful end-user training, Floyd also took advantage of Global Works Allscripts training materials. The client-specific TouchWorks Training Guides and Quick Guide books are for trainees to reference when needed. The in-depth Training Guide contains a full curriculum for the end-user that corresponds to the training agenda. The Quick Guides are tough laminated flipbooks ready for fast reference in the clinical environment.
Floyd chose to customize the materials to their needs and conducted training themselves.
According to Chad, the Floyd team was “extremely adaptive to the new technology,” adding that “they were some of the best and most self-sufficient clients that I’ve worked with.” Chad was also enthusiastic about the ease of the install for all modules and commented that his client counter parts were “superb.”
Sherri oversaw the implementation at two clinics and supported go-live for about 15 physicians. She mentions, “the installs were successful and the system was well received and accepted by the physicians and clinical staff.”
Upon completion of implementation and training, 21 residents, 10 physicians, and their staff were up to speed on Allscripts EHR. In addition, Floyd trained trainers to handle deployment to other physicians and groups as needed. Dr. Asbury, a strong supporter of the Allscripts initiative from the start, also championed his consulting team, commenting that “Floyd has been most pleased with the help we received from Global Works.”
