How long have you been working with Centricity EMR?
I've been working with Centricity EMR since 1998, when it was known as Logician.
What do you see as some advantages of Centricity EMR?
I think the two greatest advantages are its versatility and strong user community. The application can be configured to fit just about every situation imaginable and can be customized to each unique environment from the simple to the extremely complex. In addition, the application easily scales to grow with the user organization. As the users become more sophisticated, the system can be adapted to meet changing needs. The Centricity EMR user community helps foster versatility as well. The users are wonderfully supportive of each other and create a breeding ground for creativity.
What are some innovative functional uses of the software?
I've seen some organizations use the software to foster continuity of care between the hospital and outpatient environments by generating outpatient EMR reports at time of hospital admission and updating the outpatient EMR at the time of discharge. I've also seen creative use of confidential document types to incorporate psychiatry information into the EMR without jeopardizing sensitive psychiatric treatment data.
What do you hope to help clients achieve as a Senior Consultant?
My goal as a consultant is to help clients problem solve and brainstorm creative solutions to meet their strategic project objectives. Ultimately, as a nurse, I do this always with an eye to the patient. I hope to help my clients provide excellent patient care through use of an EMR.
What is the most satisfying aspect of your job?
When a busy nurse or doctor (who may have been reluctant to use an EMR) has that light bulb moment and can see the benefit of using this technology as a tool that will help them and their patients. I know this moment has happened when they tell me that they can't imagine doing their job without an EMR again.
Having just attended CHUG, what were some of your impressions of the event?
This group continues to amaze me! Not only are the usual faces continuing to innovate and find new solutions to old problems but new faces are stepping into the spotlight as well. I was also reminded that the users that are new to the product face the same challenges that I faced as a new user and it is to the benefit of all that the "old" users mentor the new ones. It was exciting to see a growing vendor presence and it struck me as I staffed the Global Works booth that the solutions being offered look beyond simple documentation of a patient visit and focus on all aspects of providing efficient, high-quality patient care and communication with patients.
